Hotel Valencia – Photography Gone Bad – Daily Photo

This week instead of looking at some of my best pictures I have been looking at the ones that did not turn out. This picture of the Hotel Valencia in San Jose was one of those that was doomed. Shooting a scene like this which is half in shade and half in bright light is mostly impossible with a single photograph. Other than coming back later or waiting for a big cloud it is difficult to solve the puzzle that this picture presents except perhaps to shoot some pictures of the shade area and separately shoot some of the sunlit area.

Have you tried playing with either cropping or HDR (High Dynamic Range) editing?
Both techniques involve taking multiple pictures at different exposure levels and then combining them, either by cropping the over/underexposed images in each picture and Photoshopping the good parts together together, or by using software to dynamically analyze the images to combine the best levels from each.
Of course, there’s the question of whether or not the image is ‘real’ once you resort to Photoshop, and you’d likely need a tripod to get the same perspective at different exposure levels, but it could overcome the shade issues.

No and I almost mentioned it. You may note I said hard to fix in a “single photo”.
