The Bonneville Salt Flats in northern Utah are very very flat. This is where the land speed records are set, but this was a much less hospitable feature to covered wagons on the Oregon Trail. The land was not as had as it looks all the way through and sometimes the animals and people sunk up to their knees in this inhospitable landscape.
