The Amateur Traveler talks to Carrie from cruisebuzz.net about a popular vacation spot just off the coast of California, Catalina Island.
Catalina was popular with old-time movie stars as a quick getaway from Southern California on their private yachts but can now be reached by regular ferry service. Some go to Catalina to tour Avalon is the main city, to relax at its beaches or to try out its new zip line. Others go to Catalina’s backcountry of rugged hikes, private beaches reachable by sea kayak or a buffalo herd left over from filming a Zane Grey movie.

I have not visited Catalina for years but, as was reported, the ferry boats were the main method of getting to Avalon. In addition there were frequent flights using flying boats and float planes. The San Pedro terminal was always very busy.
There is also an airport on the island. I believe it is only suitable for smaller planes. The approach for landing was scary. Approaching from the north, you are aimed straight for a cliff but as you get close, the updraft pushes your plane up and over the cliff. The runway is just over the edge. The restaurant at the air terminal features buffalo burgers (Or used to)
