Travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico – Episode 583

Hear about travel to Albuquerque as Chris Christensen, the Amateur Traveler himself talks about his trip to Albuquerque during the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta (as a guest of Albuquerque tourism).

I had a chance to travel to Albuquerque in October as a guest of the Tourism Board to visit the International Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. This was a trip that was quite literally on my bucket list. You get up before dawn and watch as the sun rises and 500-600 hot air balloons ascend into the sky. We even had the rare chance to go up in a balloon during one of these mass ascensions.

There is a lot to do in Albuquerque when you are not at the festival. There is a cultural center that celebrates the Native American heritage of the area as well as another one that celebrates the Hispanic heritage in one of America’s oldest cities.

We had a chance to get out to the Petroglyph National Monument to see some of the ancient history in the area as well as the National Atomic History and Science Museum to see how New Mexico has influenced the atomic age.

We not only floated over the city but also toured some of its neighborhoods via the ABQ Trolly tour where we learned great places to eat and also learned how Albuquerque has been used as a backdrop for movies and TV shows (like Breaking Bad). We also visited the zoo which is part of the ABQ BioPark.

And of course, we ate. Albuquerque is known for its spicy food scene. You could travel to Albuquerque just for the food alone. I mention some of the great restaurants and give some tips on how to answer the proverbial question in New Mexico, “red or green?”
