Travel to Santa Fe, New Mexico – Episode 356

categories: USA Travel

Hear about travel to Santa Fe, New Mexico as the Amateur Traveler talks to Billie Frank from SantaFeTravelers.com about her city, the second oldest in the United States and the oldest capital city in the U.S.

“Santa Fe is a wonderful melting pot. We have three very distinct cultures here, and the cultures tie with historical periods. You have the pueblo people who were the first settlers here. The Spanish showed up in the late 1500s, so you have the Spanish period, and then for a brief time we belonged to Mexico, and then it went to territorial U.S., and that was the anglo period. Those are the primary cultures here, and it is probably one of the only cities in the U.S. that has that cultural mix, and that cultural mix plays into what you want to see when you come to Santa Fe.”

Billie describes where you can see archeological pueblos as well as modern pueblos set in the high desert of Santa Fe. We talk about such sites as the Wheelwright Museum, Museum of Indian Women in the Arts, and Palace of the Governors, as well as the food and art of the area.

Santa Fe has an artistic tradition that can still be seen in some of the local craft shows, and that carries on into the work of well-known American artists like Georgia O’Keeffe. “Santa Fe is either the second or third largest art market in the U.S.” Artists continue to be drawn to the incredible light and to a city that gets over 320 sunny days a year, according to the tourism board. Santa Fe is at 7,000 feet, so while it is usually sunny, it also gets snow.
